Scope in Environmental Studies in India Explained

Environmental study has become a very important area of concern world over these days. Its significance has increased many folds in the last few decades. We depend on natural resources (water, minerals, petroleum, wood, etc. or environment directly on indirectly for all our daily needs. We cannot think and continue to live without protecting the Mother Earth’s environmental resources like forests, grasslands, rivers, seashores etc. We breathe air, use water to drink and use plant and animal resources which form a web of life as food. These natural resources are classified as renewable and non-renewable. Renewable resources are those resources which can be used and regenerated by natural process such as re-growth or rainfall. Timber and water are examples of such resources. They will alsodeplete if we use them faster than their natural replenishment. Non-renewable resources are those resources which will be exhausted in the near future if if we continue to exploit them. Minerals and petroleum are example of such resources.
The scope of environmental studies has grown tremendously in the recent times. Right from manufacturing pollution control equipment, sewage and effluent treatment plants, bio medical waste treatment to waste and flash treatment, there is increasing demand for experts in research and development, manufacturing and consultancy in these fields. Hence, the environmental scientists get lots of opportunities to work in government and private sector associated with the environment.

The broad areas, where scope of environmental study are lies listed below:

1. Research and development:

The requirement of skilled environmental scientists has increased with the increase in environmental problems. Experienced researches are needed to carry out research and development (R & D) activities in the are of concern. Trained and experienced researches are needed to carry out ecological, pollution and conservation related field.

2. Biodiversity Management:

Conservation of biodiversity is necessary for the future generations. We will need many scientists in future, who are well versed with biodiversity management and conservation.

3. Pollution Abatement Industry:

Industry involved in development of pollution related equipment will be a major force in future. It will be requiring trained persons for R & D and manufacturing related activities in future.

4. Environmental Counseling:

Many social issues of environmental importance are addressed by environmental studies. Environmental education has made the society aware of the ill effects of environmentally unsuitable development. Many areas of Rajasthan, Gujrat and Andhra Pradesh are worst effected by Fluorine toxicity. Environmental education has made it possible to bring such cases to the knowledge of medical science.

5. Ecological Scientists:

Many ecological scientists will be needed to carry out environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the developmental projects. Environmental or ecological scientists will be required in large number.

6. Ecomarking:

Trained man force will be in high demand for the eco-labelling of consumer products in India.

7. Force Management:

Environmental scientists are needed for proper planning and management of our forests. Forest research Institute, Dehradun and Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal has started many courses in forest management at post graduate and research level.

8. Wildlife Conservation:

Wildlife conservation is the need of the hour. We shall be requiring many conservation scientists in future. Wildlife Institute of India (Dehradun) is carrying out research in this direction.

9. Eco-tourism:

Eco-tourism has developed as an industry in India. It is growing at very fast pace at present. There is great scope trained environmentalists in this growing field of employment.

10. Green Advocacy:

Environment related litigations have increased many folds these days. We shall be requiring many environmental lawyers in the days to come.

11. Green Marketing:

A new class of managersdealing with environmentally safe products will be needed for future markets.

12. Environmental Journalism:

Environmental or green journalism is the need of the hour these days. It is urgently needed for environmental awareness of the general populace in future.

13. Environmental Consultancy:

The environmental clearance of the new projects has become necessary after the adoption of new environmental laws. The growing industry needs many environmental consultants for getting environmental clearance for their projects.
